In 1625, the Swedish king Gustav Adolf II commissioned the construction of VASA as the flagship of his Baltic fleet. Under the leadership of a Dutch shipbuilder, the work was carried out by 400 craftsmen at the Royal Shipyard in Stockholm. The hull built of oak with 2 cannon decks was completed in the beginning of 1628.
With over 700 lavishly carved and gilded sculptures and ornaments, the VASA was then designed to form a ship of impressive splendor. With a length of 69 m and 72 cannons, this warship was named after the ruling royal dynasty, one of the largest of its time. The king had an urgent need for the war against the Poles, on 10 August 1628 VASA sailed on its festive maiden voyage in the port of Stockholm. After a gust of wind, the water flowed through the open cannon gates, and in a matter of moments the VASA had sunk before the eyes of the assembled crowds. 328 years later, VASA was rediscovered in the port of Stockholm and in 1961 she was raised.
Extensive searches for parts of the vessel, their reconstruction and conservation are still ongoing. Since 1990, this unique and almost complete ship has been exhibited at the Vasa Museum in Stockholm.
